Zelensky urges protecting Olympic charter and banning Russian athletes from Paris 2024

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy today called on the international community to protect the Olympic Charter and join his campaign to prevent Russian athletes from participating in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.

This is what the Ukrainian president writes on his Twitter account.

Against the backdrop of Russia’s continued aggression and devastating war crimes, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is “examining” ways for Russian athletes to compete in the Paris Olympics. We are asking our partners to participate in our honesty marathon to fight these efforts and protect the Olympic Charter.

On January 27, Zelensky announced the start of the marathon of honesty with the aim of “putting an end to the hypocrisy of the leaders of the international Olympic structures and all attempts to involve representatives of the terrorist state in world sport.”

The president continued his tweet with a video recalling that at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, 45 out of 71 medals were won by Russian athletes affiliated with sports clubs of the Russian army.

And now in Paris Ukrainians can find a lot of them. And you’re likely to see Russian flags or pro-war Z symbols in the stands.

While Olympic officials insist that “sport is not political,” Ukraine claims that “allowing Russian athletes to compete would violate the basic tenets of the Olympic Charter.”

This begs the question: is it true sporting neutrality or capitulation to brutal Russian violence?

The video also reminds that Russian attacks destroyed and destroyed 343 sports facilities and caused the deaths of 231 Ukrainian athletes and coaches.
