Former basketball legend Bryant’s MVP jersey sold at auction for 5.4 million euros

The jersey worn by basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who died in an accident in 2020, was sold for 5.8 million dollars, or approximately 5.4 million euros, at the Sotheby’s auction held in New York.

This was a Los Angeles Lakers jersey from the 2007/2008 season, which Bryant wore a total of 25 times. It was the only season he was named the NBA’s MVP (Most Valuable Player). The Lakers reached the NBA Finals, losing to the Boston Celtics that season.

The buyer wants to remain anonymous.

Bryant’s jersey is the third most expensive sports jersey of all time. In May last year, the late Maradona’s jersey was sold for $9.3m (8.7m euros). The Argentine wore it during the 1986 World Cup.

In September, the 1998 Michael Jordan basketball jersey fell into the hands of the buyer for $10.1 million.

Bryant died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020, along with his 13-year-old daughter and seven others. During his acting career, Bryant won five NBA championships and two Olympic gold medals, among other things. He was selected to the All Star Team eighteen times.
