Titanic turns 25 and Cameron admits that Jack can survive

On the eve of the return of this blockbuster, which hit the big screen with its anniversary edition, the Canadian filmmaker admitted that he would have imagined the story differently if he had anticipated the anger of fans saddened by the tragic death. At the end of the movie, Jack is the hero.

Laughing at the film’s anniversary press conference, he said, “With what I know now, I would have made Tuesdays smaller, there’s no question about that!” said.

The popularity of the film is so great that there are still discussions about the fate of the main character played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Fans insist Jack could survive in the cold waters of the North Atlantic after the ocean liner sank. All he had to do was climb onto the makeshift raft to rescue Kate Winslet’s love interest, Rose.

Instead, she decides that the door Rose swims in isn’t big enough for two, and sacrifices herself so Rose can survive.

Cameron said the controversy over Jack’s death was just one example of how the Titanic story “seemed endless to the public”.

Referring to the two world wars that defined the 20th century, he added: “There have been far greater tragedies since the Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in 1912.” “But Titanic has that kind of enduring, almost mythical, romantic quality.”

“I think it’s about love, sacrifice and death,” says the director, pointing to “the men who don’t get on lifeboats to save women and children.”

“Last decision?”

Cameron puts Jack’s individual self-sacrifice to the test in a new National Geographic documentary featuring experiments in two twin ice water tanks and the exact same door used in the filming.

In Titanic: 25 Years Later, the two lookalikes who take on the roles of Jack and Rose are equipped with various thermometers to measure how quickly they will fall victim to hypothermia.

Experience has shown that Jack’s tragic fate is not inevitable.

The first test, in which Jack clings on without climbing up the door like in the movie, confirms that he will die of hypothermia. But a second test, where Jack and Rose manage to balance on the door to keep their bodies and thus vital organs out of the water, suggests that Jack may have been saved.

In this scenario, “I could hold out until the lifeboat came,” Cameron admitted.

“Last decision? Jack may have survived. But there are a lot of variables,” he added.

epic love story

Titanic first premiered in December 1997 and hit the box office for 15 consecutive weekends.

While most movies these days receive their biggest payouts on their opening weekend, Titanic peaked on its eighth weekend: Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14.

The epic love story kicks off again for this year’s Valentine’s Day weekend when it hopes to surpass $2.2 billion in global gross sales.

“I estimate $100 million of our box office revenue comes from Leonardo DiCaprio’s focus on 14-year-olds,” Cameron scoffed.

Titanic is the third highest-grossing movie in history, after the superhero movie Avengers: Endgame and Cameron’s number one movie, Avatar.

But the Canadian’s new hit “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which has already grossed $2,180 million and continues to draw crowds to theaters, is expected to quickly surpass it.

Together, these three Cameron cashier giants accounted for about $7.25 billion of Bermuda’s GDP.

Three Hours of Titanic not only made the director extremely wealthy, but also left an important, if controversial, legacy.

“Before ‘Titanic,’ people believed you couldn’t make money on a full-length movie,” Cameron said. But “Avatar” is 162 minutes long and more – 192 minutes. “And he does that very well,” she says.
