De Graafschap coach Adrie Poldervaart is in hospital with a serious and rare nerve condition. The 52-year-old coach was admitted as suffering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome on Monday.
Poldervaart aired the news on ESPN Friday night via Hans Kraay junior. The manager wanted to remove the stories about De Graafschap working overtime due to his poor performance at home.
miserable and powerless
“I feel miserable and powerless, but I want people to know what my problem is,” Poldervaart said of Kraay. “So people don’t think I’m a coach who works hard and doesn’t have enough points.”
In Guillain-Barré Syndrome, the muscles in the arms, legs, and trunk can become severely weakened within days or weeks. Sometimes patients can become paralyzed. Poldervaart, who passed various tests at the hospital, will be examined in detail in the coming days.
“I had an MRI scan of my brain stem, back and neck yesterday. That looked pretty good, I can start taking medication,” Kraay said on behalf of the coach. An electromyography measuring the conduction velocity of the nerves showed less good results.
Poldervaart has a rare variant of nerve disease. “I can’t sleep and I walk very badly with a cane,” she says.
lost to NAC
De Graafschap lost 2-0 to NAC Breda in the Kitchen Champion Division on Friday. Assistant Richard Roelofsen took his place on the Poldervaart bench. The Doetinchem team is disappointingly fourteenth.
Poldervaart was previously head coach of Excelsior and worked as assistant coach at FC Groningen.
