Swiss Flury brakes with downhill World Cup gold, favorite Goggia goes wrong

Skier Jasmine Flury surprisingly won the world title on the descent at Courchevel Méribel, France. The Swiss athlete was 0.04 faster than Austrian Nina Ortlieb and 0.12 faster than her compatriot, Olympic champion and reigning champion Corinne Suter.

Favorite Sofia Goggia, who has won four of six World Cup races this winter, skied through a door with a goal in mind. This ultimately led to the disqualification of the Italians who were good for Olympic gold in 2018.

However, Goggia was out of the race for the sixth time, wearing a black bracelet in memory of his compatriot Elena Fanchini, who died last week.

The 29-year-old Flury has only managed to podium twice at the World Cup, his only win in 2017. Ortlieb, who is three years his junior, is not a regular on the podium with just one World Championship medal (and one win).

“I do not know what to say. That’s really, really unrealistic,” stammered the emotional Flury later. “Being on stage with Corinne is something very special.”
