The Super Bowl returns on Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL’s biggest game of the season.
The colossal event is a truly global event, with last year’s game watched by an estimated 208 million people worldwide and huge sums of money swirling around it, from exorbitant ticket prices to impressive advertising revenue.
But other than the Bruce Lombardi Trophy and all the bragging rights that go with it, what really is there for Super Bowl winners? And indeed, losers?
Here’s everything you need to know about Super Bowl prize money:
How much money will the winners receive?
For Chiefs and Eagles players, there’s more than just the NFL championship at stake, as each member of the Super Bowl-winning team can pocket $157,000, or roughly £130,000, in bonus money. This is a $7,000 increase over last year’s award and is in line with the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement.
And the losers?
Unsurprisingly, there isn’t much of a bonus for losers, but it’s not exactly peanuts. Players on the losing team will still receive $82,000, or around £68,000.
How much does the game itself earn?
Absolutely huge sums of money revolve around the big game. With a worldwide audience of millions, it generates incredible advertising revenue, close to $500 million last year. As a result, the average 30-second commercial during a game broadcast cost a staggering $6.5 million during last year’s event.
Americans are also spending large amounts of money ahead of the game, with consumer spending estimated at around $16.5 billion for this year’s event, and fans across the country stocking up on food, drinks, gear and jewelry.
How much are the tickets?
Not surprisingly, the NFL’s biggest game of the season comes with a hefty price tag. Those who want to see the game in person at State Farm Stadium will have to shell out thousands of dollars, although the cost varies greatly over time.
In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, tickets were still available for $3,000 to $4,000, although some went for as much as $25,000.
But this is nothing compared to the cost of the elite stadium halls. With 18 tickets, two VIP parking tickets and a food and alcohol package, they cost between 1.5 and 2 million dollars.
