Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl LVII Most Valuable Player (MVP) on Sunday after leading his team to a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
“I said nothing would stop me, I am grateful to my teammates because we are champions. We’re not a dynasty yet because we’re not done yet,” Mahomes said at the end of the game.
Patrick is the first player to win MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season this century.
Mahomes overcame the pain of an ankle injury, which got worse for the first half, as his team trailed by 10 points. Despite this, he took the field in the third quarter to force the comeback.
Also named regular season MVP, he completed 21 of 27 passes, passed for 182 yards, and got three touchdown passes. He is the first regular season MVP to win a Super Bowl since 1999.
It is the second time Mahomes has been named MVP of the NFL Championship Game. The first came in Super Bowl LIV, in which he led the Chiefs to victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
The 27-year-old quarterback from Tyler, Texas finished the regular season as the best in his position. He had 5,250 yards and 41 touchdowns; he suffered 12 interceptions and was sacked 26 times.
En route to the NFL title game, he collected two touchdown passes against the Jaguars in the division round, two more against the Bengals in the AFC Finals, and three in the Lombardi Trophy game.
With the pair of Most Valuable Player awards in the NFL title game, Mahomes tied all-timers like Terry Bradshaw, Eli Manning and Bart Starr, who have earned an equal number of titles.
In Super Bowl history, the top MVP winner is recently retired Tom Brady, who has collected five in his 23-year career, followed by San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana, who has three.
