Winnie the Pooh in horror version causes controversy

Winnie the Pooh is known as the sweet bear, but he’s gotten a gruesome makeover as a knife-wielding villain in a new horror movie full of honey and gore.

The shocking reinvention of the Pooh character had its world premiere in Mexico in January and grossed nearly $1 million in two weeks, and some industry analysts say it could become a blockbuster.

But the film, which hits US theaters next week and is set to release in Argentina on March 2, has already received death threats from angry fans and could push the boundaries of copyright law.

“This is crazy,” Rhys Frake-Waterfield, director of Winnie the Pooh: Honey and Blood, told AFP.

“I received requests to stop the film. I have received death threats. “There are people who say they called the police,” he said.

While the cinematic adventures of Pooh and his friends Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger have been licensed to Disney for decades, the copyrights of AA Milne’s early books have recently expired and small independent British studio Frake-Waterfield is stepping up to the challenge.
