Van de Looi quits Dutch youth national coaching after European Championship: “It’s time for something else”

KNVB is looking for a new national coach for Dutch youth. Erwin van de Looi will retire next summer after the European Championships in Romania and Georgia. The 50-year-old coach managed the team for five seasons and qualified for the European Championship twice.

“I have enjoyed working at KNVB for five years,” Van de Looi says in a press release. “It’s always been an honor to work with some of our country’s greatest football talents, especially when you see these guys move on to the Dutch national team. I think we achieved good results and gave Dutch youth their face again. “

criticism

Van de Looi carried the Dutch youth to the European Championship for the first time since 2013, when he was criticized for his changing and conservative playing style. Still, the Oranges advanced to the semi-finals in Hungary after a big win over championship favourites, France. In the semi-finals, eventual champion Germany proved to be very strong.

“It was a good time, but I have a feeling it’s time for something different,” explains Van de Looi. That’s why I decided not to renew my contract.”

The former defender worked as head coach of FC Groningen and Willem II in the major divisions, before taking over as national manager, and won the KNVB Cup with Groningen in 2015.

“I will see what new challenges I will face in the near future. First of all, of course, there is a great European Championship that we want to lead together to success.

KNVB director: “You did an excellent job”

Professional football director Marianne van Leeuwen is grateful to Van de Looi. He did an excellent job with Dutch Juniors, both in terms of sport and organization. Under his leadership, Dutch Juniors qualified twice for the final round with attractive football.”

The U21 European Championship will be held from 9 June to 2 July in Romania and Georgia.
