Surprise! Argentina is out of the World Cup basketball

The elimination of Argentina, the current runner-up, is the big bomb of the qualifying phase for this year’s Basketball World Cup to be held in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.

The team led by Pablo Prigioni, which could count on its best players, such as Facundo Campazzo, Nico Laprovittola, Gaby Deck or Nicolás Brussino, lost 75-79 against the Dominican Republic in Mar del Plata.

The result dropped the Albiceleste out of the closing stages to finish fourth in Group E, behind Canada, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, and was hurt by Brazil’s victory over the United States (83-76), as the Canarinha also finished fourth in F, and Argentina lost in the tiebreak as they had a bigger points difference.

The Dominicans, led by Argentina’s Néstor ‘Che’ García, were calm, had great defense and offensive resources, especially through the young Jean Montero, to clear a seventeen-point deficit and finally celebrate in the sports center from Islas Malvinas to qualify for a World Cup for the third time in a row.

A streak of nine consecutive World Cups was broken for Argentina, which will miss the tournament for the first time since 1982. It has come second twice in this process. In 2002 they lost to Yugoslavia in the final and in 2019 in China to Spain.

The great play of Real Madrid player Gaby Deck, author of 27 points – the game’s top scorer, among the ten of Campazzo, Laprovittola and Marcos Delia – was worthless. The Dominican comeback, signed at the last minute (they faced a draw at 73) with baskets from Víctor Liz, Eloy Vargas and Montero, was a fact and Argentina bid farewell to the World Cup on a fateful and historic night.

The roster for the Americas zone at the universal event will consist of the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Brazil. Seven selections and out the current US champion.
