Warren Gatland has been told his tactics must evolve or he will fail in his second spell as Wales manager.
Former England international Andy Good believes the game has changed Gatland’s coaching methods and doubts he is suited for the role.
A second expert, former Scotland captain John Barkley, also insisted that changes to the way top teams play since Gatland last coached Wales meant that the basic tactics his team employed against England had little chance of failure.
Speaking to The Rugby Pod, Hood said: “What I’m going to say about Wales, I feel really bad saying this – the way they play, the way the Gats train, the game has changed.
“You look at the Lions in 2021, how he built this Lions team to try to play in South Africa, how Wales plays, what he did with the Chiefs in Waikato. It needs to evolve.

“One out of rugby and the shots that Wales showed, it was terrible. When you want a massive reaction I was very disappointed with the way Wales fared, the way they played. Their offense, they kept making short balls with nines, there’s no movement, no tricks, so they’re just kicking Freddie Steward the whole time.”
Hood continued: “England was a monster at times tactically and physically. There was a lot of pressure on the teams but I was really disappointed with Wales, I thought there was a lot of energy in the game and what they put in there.
“I look at Gates and say, ‘If you’re preparing your teams this way, you need to improve as a coach.’
“If that’s what he’s going to do, he has no players. He’s not from South Africa so he doesn’t have the players to play that way and he needs to develop as a manager. Is he the right man to take Wales forward, I don’t know.
“You just drive your players into brick walls and nothing changes during the game, you’re in charge. You build a team to play with and you have to play with the players you have.”
BBC commentator Barclay said: “It’s about a lack of succession planning with Wales.
“I can’t think of many teams where the gap between the guys who are out and the next guy is 100 games or 80 games. The difference is crazy.
“It’s very difficult for guys like Jack Morgan, Mason Grady. These guys should come to the team with a combination of experience and youth, but they come to a team where everyone is new and there is no confidence.
“If I am Gatland now, where do I start? You need results, you need to build trust. Do you have enough time to say, “This is where I am, this is the game plan I want us to play” and push players hard?
“Or are you saying you’re using a very limited game plan, which is what they’re doing right now?
“I think rugby has evolved a lot in the last 18 to 24 months and if you run up to people and hit the ball, you’re not going to beat anybody. That’s what Wales tried to do over the weekend.
“There has to be more to the game than just a little bit of physicality and footwork.”
