The PGA this Wednesday announced a format change from 2024, with eight special tournaments open to a limited number of players, between the ages of 70 and 78, with no cuts and higher prize pools.
The eight special tournaments will be added to the “Bigs,” “The Players,” and the three events of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the PGA said in a statement.
The format change “will change and set the course for the future,” Commissioner Jay Monahan said, after the PGA Board of Directors approved the change Tuesday night.
One of the main novelties is that there is no cut after 36 holes, so the main players will compete in the first two rounds the four days after their appearance.
In addition, these tournaments will put FedExCup points on the line.
Monahan assured that this change will provide fans with “unmissable tournaments” during the season.
The PGA stressed that the big, The Players and the Playoffs will not be affected by these changes and will maintain the cut after 36 holes.
With these measures and a significant increase in prize pools, the PGA aims to strengthen its movement in the face of the threat of LIV Golf, the new circuit launched last year and funded by the Saudi Arabian government, which aims to rival the quality and the prestige of the American body.
