Feyenoord advances to the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup after a tough night at Heerenveen

Feyenoord advanced to the KNVB Cup semi-finals after a narrow 1-0 win at sc Heerenveen. Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez was the winner with eleven minutes left in a game where there were several big chances.

There are two more matches tomorrow in the quarterfinals against PSV, ADO Den Haag and Ajax hosts De Graafschap. Previously, amateurs from Spakenburg had surprisingly and spectacularly won at FC Utrecht.

Fabulous start in Heerenveen

Feyenoord is at the top of the Eredivisie, Heerenveen is at the top of the right row, i.e. tenth. In the packed Abe Lenstra Stadium, this difference was not felt at first.

Heerenveen pressed early and aggressively and had more possession than Feyenoord. In the fifth minute leading to the first chance of the match, Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther saved a shot from Sydney van Hooijdonk.

Starting with the same squad as in Sunday’s Eredivisie’s 4-2 win over Fortuna Sittard, Feyenoord later took control of the game, although it didn’t create a real position. Feyenoord’s first shot by Alireza Jahanbakhsh flew high in the nineteenth minute.

About half an hour before the game, Heerenveen had a great chance when Feyenoord captain Orkun Kükcü stumbled upon the ball. Rami Al Hajj fired the ball, passed it to Van Hooijdonk, who hurriedly shot into the side nets one on one with Wellenreuther. It turned out to be the greatest chance for peace.

After the break, the Rotterdam side started better and striker Santiago Giménez immediately got a chance. The Mexican was over. Despite the revival, the second half picked up where it left off: a tougher and stronger Heerenveen putting Feyenoord under heavy pressure.

A Quilindschy Hartman header was stopped by Heerenveen goalkeeper Xavier Mous after a long attack. He replaces Andries Noppert, who is still injured.

For a moment it looked like the teams were preparing for overtime, until Gimenez made a pass under Mous with eleven minutes left. After a good combination involving Jahanbakhsh, the forward was passed by Danilo in the penalty area: 0-1.

Where Heerenveen usually excels at 1-0, the Frisians were unable to lead a final attack. Substitutions didn’t work for Coach Kees van Wonderen, so the trophy season for the Frisians is over.
