Rob Page has appointed Manchester United first-team manager Eric Ramsey as his new assistant in Wales ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, which starts this month.

Ramsay, who hails from central Wales, began his managerial career at Swansea City before moving to Shrewsbury Town. The Welshman joined Chelsea in 2019 as an under-23 manager before moving to the Manchester United first team in 2021.

The appointment comes after Page’s previous assistant, Keith Simons, lost his job in January after a disappointing performance at the World Cup.

Ramsey, who will combine his role with Wales alongside his duties at Old Trafford, initially focused on set-pieces and technical skills at Manchester United and is highly regarded by the Premier League giants. Indeed, when he was linked with the vacant role at Barnsley last summer, it was clear that United had made an effort to retain him.

Erik ten Hag was clearly impressed, with United midfielder Christian Eriksen even crediting Ramsey for Marcus Rashford’s goal against Nottingham Forest from a well crafted post-Christmas set piece. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described the 31-year-old as “fresh, young and innovative” when he was first appointed to the role in 2021.

Of his new role in Wales, Ramsey said: “Having grown up in Llanfyllin, I am incredibly excited to be joining the Welsh organisation. There is so much buzz around the national team and its recent success that now is a great time to join.

“As the team has gone through a small change, it feels like a fresh start. I’ve already had some good conversations with Rob and Alan Knill, so I think the ingredients are there to make it an exciting time.”

Wales also announced a second appointment in the form of West Ham fitness coach Nick Davies, who will join Page as chief specialist. Davies, from Port Talbot, has worked for several Premier League clubs including Charlton, Birmingham, Norwich and West Bromwich Albion.

Commenting on the appointments, Page said: “Nick and Eric will be two great additions to our team. Nick has extensive experience at top clubs and Eric is probably one of the best young football managers around right now.

“The changes give us the opportunity to build on our success by adding new players to the squad at the right time. Hopefully over the next 12 months we will have the next batch of players to represent Wales at the highest level. »

Ramsay and Davies will form part of the next camp when Wales travel to Croatia on March 25th, before taking on Latvia at the Cardiff City Stadium on March 28th.
