More than two years later, the disciplinary investigation against Vincent Wevers, a gymnastics trainer at the Sports Law Institute, has ended. He was acquitted during the appeal process on Thursday, after being acquitted by the ISR Disciplinary Board last year.
The coach of 2016 – who at the time took his daughter Sanne to Olympic gold on beam in Rio de Janeiro – is happy with the result. It only wants to respond to NOS Sport in writing.
Vincent Wevers’ full description:
“First of all, of course, I am happy with this decision. The case kept me on hold for two and a half years and left me in the middle. Fortunately, that judgment is now over.”
“Since the summer of 2020, my life has been turned upside down. The accusations affected me and my family personally. It also cost me my job.”
“With all the attention and sensitivity of the media about me as a person, with this case and such proceedings, I felt powerless and did not seem appropriate to be involved in the public debate that ensued. The latter was certainly not the case. It’s always there. Sometimes I had to bite the tip of my tongue.”
“I am pleased once again that the ISR Appeals Committee has once again acquitted me of disorderly conduct. Still, I am very aware that this process only knows the losers. Reporters will certainly be disappointed. But gymnastics itself took a hard hit.”
“For the current generation of top athletes and gymnasts I’ve worked with for the last two or three years, they haven’t received optimal care and have fallen victim to this gymnastics crisis. What I hope and expect from the KNGU Board of Directors is that it is aware of and accepts its responsibility with the attitude it displays in this process.
“I invite everyone to look forward again. I now focus on providing basic training at Top Gymnastics Academy Achterhoek in Varsseveld. I would like to contribute and continue to contribute to the development of this region, but also to the national selection and Dutch gymnastics in general. This description speaks to the fact that I can retrain gymnasts on the international sports stages.
