The World Baseball Classic is coming!

This itches and spreads. The emotions of Colombian baseball did not stop with the dispute in the Professional League and the excellent performance of the Vaqueros de Montería in the Caribbean Series, in Caracas, Venezuela. Our hot ball, despite the little support it receives from the state (see separate note), continues to stand out for the country and be present in the most relevant leagues.

Now the Colombian senior team is getting ready to compete in the World Classic, the most important tournament between countries in the world of bats and handles. The debut in the 2023 edition will take place against Mexico, on Saturday, March 11, at Chase Field, in Phoenix, Arizona (United States), from 2:30 p.m.

Colombia, led by Jólbert Cabrera, is in Group C, based in Phoenix, along with Mexico, Great Britain, Canada and the United States. In Group D, with a place in Miami, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Israel play.

Group A, hosted by Taiwan, consists of Chinese Taipei, the Netherlands, Cuba, Italy and Panama, while Group B, held in Tokyo, Japan, consists of the host country, South Korea. , Australia, China and the Czech Republic.

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18 at LoanDepot Park in Miami.

If Colombia comes first in group C, it will face the second placed in group D. If it succeeds second, it will face the first in group D.

TRIP

Most national team members are in the United States working on the Major League Baseball preseason, but about ten people, led by general manager Jimmy Char Navas, will leave Colombia for North American territory on Monday.

“Major League Baseball (MLB) covers tickets, lodging, and per diem ($100 per day for each of the 52 members of the delegation). Also supplies helmets, catch sets, balls and bats. Everything,” explained Char Navas.

“The Colombian Baseball Federation has paid for everything related to the visa procedures, the travel to Bogotá to pick them up and everything else,” he added.
