Brazilian referee Romualdo Arppi Filho, who refereed the final in Mexico in which Argentina won the national championship twice in 1986 after a 3-2 win over Germany, died on Sunday at the age of 84.
Arppi Filho, who is considered one of Brazil’s most prominent referees, died of kidney complications at Ana Costa Hospital in the city of Santos, Sao Paulo state, according to his relatives.
Arppi Filho was the second Brazilian, after Arnaldo Cézar Coelho, to referee a final in a World Cup.
Born in Santos on January 7, 1939, he began his career in adolescence -at the age of 14- and at the age of 20 he was already doing it professionally, reaching his peak in the eighties.
The Brazilian referee also refereed the 1984 Intercontinental Cup final, between Argentina’s Independiente and England’s Liverpool, and competed in the Olympic Games in Mexico (1968), Moscow (1980) and Los Angeles (1984).
After hanging up his flute, Arppi Filho worked in real estate. He leaves behind three children and three grandchildren.
