Puerto Rico knocked out the Dominican and her figure was injured in the celebration

Puerto Rico celebrates its team’s 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic this Thursday and its pass to the second round of the World Baseball Classic, though it is concerned about the injury of its closer, Edwin Díaz, after finishing the game.

After Díaz gave the final out of the game, the Puerto Rican players threw themselves onto the field at LoanDepot Park in Miami to celebrate the thrilling win, but the closer injured his right leg in the process.

Díaz fell to the ground, while the rest of his teammates surrounded him, asking him if he was all right and worrying about the moment and the chance that he might not pitch again in the tournament.

Diaz was then carried off the field by several members of the team’s coaching staff, including pitching coach Ricky Bones, and then placed in a wheelchair pending medical exams today to learn more about his injury.

“We wish our Edwin ‘Sugar’ Díaz, who sustained an injury to his right knee this Wednesday, a speedy recovery during the team’s celebration,” the team’s general manager Joey Solá said in a statement.

“Edwin is the main figure of our ‘bullpen’ and one of the leaders of the group. Any news will be informed in a timely manner,” added Solá.

The winning pitcher of the stake was Fernando Cruz and the loser was Johnny Cueto.

Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic met for the sixth time in a World Classic and with last night’s victory, the Puerto Ricans tied the record of their encounters 3-3.

Both teams reached the final date of Group D with two wins and one loss against Venezuela, the territory’s undisputed and undefeated leader and which will face the United States in Miami on Saturday.

Puerto Rico will play against Mexico on Friday.

The winners of each match advance to the semi-finals.
