Elena Rybakina won the big WTA tournament at Indian Wells. The Kazakh Wimbledon champion won the final 7-6 (11), 6-4 against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.
Sabalenka was number two in the world and had won their previous four matches with Rybakina (global number ten) in three sets. One of those four wins was the Australian Open final earlier this year.
In the variable first set, Sabalenka was allowed to open the set at 5:4, but this was not possible.
This was followed by a tiebreak filled with missed shots and double faults, in which Rybakina cleared two sets of points from Sabalenka. On his sixth chance, he finally shot himself.
In the second set, Sabalenka went from 2-5 to 4-5, but that’s it.
Alcaraz vs Medvedev
Tonight is the men’s final. Between Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, who regained the lead in the world rankings with a win over Novak Djokovic.
