Benjamin Gil was fired as manager of Culiacan tomato farms for Liga Mexicana del Pacifico (LMP) despite the Mexican baseball team’s push for a historic third-place finish in the last World Baseball Classic.
In his statement, Tomateros says:
The results achieved in the 2022-2023 season and irreconcilable differences in sports strategy and management led us to this difficult decision.
Gil gave the Tomateros their last four titles, placing him second among the ninth most winners in the LMP with 13, six short of the Naranjeros de Hermosillo.
In the last campaign, however, Culiacan was bottom of the table with 26 wins and 42 losses.
The quarterback was still fired during the LMP’s final season; However, players requested their return and the policy was subsequently granted.
Gil leaves an important legacy in our organization and a large footprint in our cherry nation, so we wish him the best of luck in his future projects.
Culiacán made no mention of the driver taking over at Tomateros for the 2023-2024 season, which will start in the final months of the year.
Gil led the Mexican national team to its best performance in the classic baseball world, after leading his group over the United States and Canada, defeating Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals, but losing to Japan in the semifinals.
Mexico finished third in the Clássico, surpassing the sixth place they had won in the first edition in 2006, this was their best participation in the competition to that point.
