Michael van Gerwen has reached the quarter-finals of the Premier League for the second time. In the opening match of the ninth round in Berlin, he lost 5:6 to eventual winner Jonny Clayton.
Van Gerwen didn’t earn much in the German capital, averaging 89.19 per stroke, as he later learned. In the first game against Clayton, he missed three arrows for the tops (double tops) and Welsh broke him right away.
Van Gerwen was on the right track as Clayton didn’t show his best play either. Still, she always struggled with her couples. While trailing 4-3, he partially beat Clayton by 180 shots.
It continued evenly, so a decisive leg was required when the score was 5:5. Van Gerwen started, but that advantage quickly faded like snow in the sun. Clayton took the advantage and clinched the win.
Following Van Gerwen, Clayton defeated Gerwyn Price (6-4) in the semi-finals and again Michael Smith 6-4 in the final.
The defeated Van Gerwen had previously won the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds of the Premier League and remains in the lead with 25 points.
