Ide Schelling won the second stage of the Basque Country Tour. Bora’s driver became the best in the sprint on Tuesday afternoon, after four 194 kilometers with a mountain in the second and third category, and took the lead in the general classification with his victory.
Six drivers embarked on an adventure from the very beginning. On the last climb, Mikel Landa was caught at the end of the gold with eighteen kilometers to go. Five kilometers from the finish, another group was caught ahead. The train then threw itself.
About 500 meters into the finish, Schelling roared forward and held him impressively in the final soft corners. Italy’s Matteo Sobrero was second and France’s David Gaudu was third.
“Extremely Happy”
“This is the first win of the season and I’m very happy about it,” Schelling later said. “But to be honest, I don’t understand why the UCI cycling federation approved this finish because it was too dangerous. I was good on the landing and was able to avoid falling. With one kilometer left, everything fell into place and I started sprinting in the 500 meters and I knew no one was going to get through the corners.
Criticizing the dangerous finale, Schelling said, “Descent with a full peloton is a problem.” “But that’s what it is. Luckily, I finally found the space. I had a very difficult season last year and I wasn’t sure if I could get back to my old level. But this year I started well.” and it’s incredible.”
This is Schelling’s second professional win to win the 2021 Canton of Aargau GP in Switzerland. He also wore the dotted mountain classification jersey for a few days in the 2021 Tour de France.
