Former Preston and Wales striker Chad Evans faces “life-changing consequences” after developing a serious medical condition as a result of “repeated high-force contact” during his career.
The 34-year-old needs surgery for an issue more common among football and rugby players and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. Evans and his club are still hoping he will return to action.
“Preston North End can confirm that striker Chad Evans will be unavailable for an extended period due to a serious illness,” the club said in a statement. “The 34-year-old striker has suffered life-changing consequences from the repeated high-force contact he has received on a weekly basis throughout his career.
“The condition requires surgery to treat its current symptoms and prevent further damage in the future. A specific timeframe for a possible return will not be released until the result of the surgery is known, but all parties are hopeful that Chad will return to play and score goals in the PNE shirt in the future.”
Evans, who has also played for Manchester City, Norwich, Sheffield United, Chesterfield and Fleetwood, has scored nine goals in 26 Sky Bet Championship appearances this season.
North End manager Ryan Lowe said: “We will be there for him every day. Whatever he needs, we will be there for him and his family.
“It’s been tough for me, the team and the players because it’s a little sickening when you get that news in an instant.
“The most important thing for me as a coach is Chad’s health. He will have to decide what he wants to do with his future and whatever he decides to do, we will support him 100 percent.”
