Van de Zandschulp absent from Monte Carlo after mixed match with Ruud

Botic van de Zandschulp missed the 16th round of the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo. Veenendalers lost in a very uneven match against Norway’s Casper Ruud: 5:7, 6:7 (1).

The fact that Van de Zandschulp knows how to beat the world fourth is demonstrated by his 3-1 lead in joint matches. Similar in Miami at the end of March. It was different this time on Monegasque gravel.

Haarhuis sees varying levels

During the game full of shortcomings, the levels of both players went up and down, and Ruud was the one who managed to shoot at important moments.

In Monte Carlo, Van de Zandschulp took a 4-1 lead in the second set with unnecessary mistakes, under the supervision of Dutch coach Paul Haarhuis, captain of Davis Cup.

Ruud, who won his first title of 2023 at Estoril last weekend, is back and looks ready to take the win 6-5. Due to a series of awkward decisions (moderate shooting), he was unable to serve the game.

Van de Zandschulp was still alive, but his energy and level at the tie-break weren’t close enough to win another third set.

The curtain fell on Tallon Grepes last Monday. The Amsterdam native lost to former winner Stan Wawrinka in the first round in Monte Carlo.
