The Glasgow Warriors scored an excellent try against the Dragons in the Challenge Cup and the play bears a striking resemblance to Phil Bennett’s iconic goal against Scotland.
The two teams met in the round of 16 of European competition two weeks ago, with Glasgow winning 73-33 before beating Emirates Lions in the quarter-finals last weekend. They will face the Scarlets at Llanelli in the semi-finals at the end of April.
Scotland international Rory Darge starts his march into the area with a burst of speed inside his own five-metre line, through two players. The back line delays the pass, trapping a man and finding George Horn somewhat confused.
As the back nine is decided, it is handed over to Scottish Six Nations star Kyle Steyn. Flyer gets in last man and throws the ball to Hugh Jones as he is tackled. Jones made a great baseline and easily raced under the posts to finish off a stunning attempt by the Glasgow men.

Many readers will be familiar with Bennett’s iconic tenth try for Wales against Scotland. Glasgow’s attempt may lack the thrilling lateral steps, countless volleys and spectacular passes, but there are still similarities. Both moves start on the right flank, with each team in the middle of the field.
Horne’s volley is in almost the same place on the pitch as David Burcher’s 1977 volley to sack Bennett, and is taken to the top in exactly the same way. Steyn’s stride is similar to Bennett’s and almost at the same point off the 22nd. However, Bennett didn’t have to pass because his stride was unexpectedly excellent!
Although the Glasgow effort lacked the class of Bill McLaren on the microphone, Scotsman Rory Hamilton paid tribute.
“Rory Darge! Win one, win two and third! He has George Horn about to be caught, but he finds Stein… Hugh Jones inside, for God’s sake! It’s a perfect result,” purred Hamilton.
You can compare for yourself and hear McLaren’s iconic commentary on Wales’ greatest effort below.
