Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel said on Friday that Senegal striker Sadio Mane has admitted his mistake – after attacking his teammate Leroy Sane – and has issued a convincing apology.
“I know him, I know his environment, I know he is a complete professional. I had never done anything like this. Everyone has the right to make a mistake, this was too much, also against Bayern’s code of conduct. He’s seen it this way and he’s apologized convincingly,” Tuchel said.}
“He was exemplary afterwards, showing his face and apologizing. Sometimes you want those things to stay in the dressing room, but that’s a lot to ask,” he added.
Tuchel said he had not directly witnessed the beating, which took place in the dressing room after the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.
The most important thing was to solve the case quickly and turn the page, said the coach.
“Because it was something that worried us and it had been serious, we had to solve it before the next training. This cleared the air so that we can train together,” he said.
“We are not the first team to be faced with something like this, and we won’t be the last. The way the two involved have behaved afterwards has had something of a cleansing effect on it,” he added.
Mané has been excluded from the selection for tomorrow’s game against Hoffenheim as a sanction and will have to pay a fine.
According to Tuchel, the case is now complete and will only have consequences this weekend.
Some media outlets considered the possibility of Mane being permanently banned from the team and it was later said that Sane himself had come into his defense to avoid that extreme.
The incident in Manchester was reminiscent of another incident from 2012, when Franck Ribery punched Arjen Robben with whom he had previously argued on the pitch during half-time of a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid.
In the following season, Bayern won the Champions League and the winning goal in the final, 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund, was scored by Robben from a pass from Ribery.
