The Colombian Olympic Committee (COC) hopes to bring a delegation of at least 471 athletes to the Central American and Caribbean Games, which begin in 70 days, on June 23 in San Salvador and Santo Domingo.
That is the forecast that the COC has made for the games that will last until July 8.
Colombia intends to maintain third place on the overall medal table achieved four years ago in the city of Barranquilla.
On that occasion, the coffee delegation achieved 79 gold, 94 silver and 97 bronze, placing it third behind Mexico and Cuba.
However, a COC source told Efe that “these forecasts are preliminary” and will be updated once “the payrolls of the other countries” are known.
For these games, the main cards for Colombia are the athletes who have won medals in the Tokyo Olympics, including athlete Anthony Zambrano; walker Sandra Lorena Arenas – who got her place in Paris 2014 a month ago, and Mariana Pajón, two-time Olympic BMX champion.
Another golden coffee hope of the coffee delegation is weightlifting, a sport for which qualification has not yet been held.
However, it is expected that in this sport the Colombian representation will be led, among others, by recent world medalists Yenny Álvarez, Francisco Mosquera, Santiago Rodallegas, Nathalia Llamosa or Luis Javier Mosquera, who are part of the team that qualified for the Games of the Dominican Republic.
In speed skating, Colombia also hopes to dominate, as it has done in recent editions of the Central American and Caribbean Games.
In team sports, the country also hopes to repeat the good performance of five years ago in women’s basketball, in which the team won gold by beating Cuba 67-65 in the final.
The XXIV edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games will take place in the capital of El Salvador and will have a number of games in the capital of the Dominican Republic.
Athletes from 36 countries will compete in 54 disciplines from 38 sports awarding just over 440 medals.
