Feyenoord’s probability of winning his sixteenth national title is Monday, May 15 at the earliest. The City of Rotterdam says celebrating a championship early involves financial risks.
Leader Feyenoord could potentially clinch the Premier League title with an away win against Excelsior on Sunday 7 May. In this case, number two PSV may not win against Sparta on Saturday, May 6th.
So a folk festival could be held in the center of Rotterdam on May 7, but the municipality will not hold official celebrations until Monday, May 15.
According to the Rotterdam municipality, it is not possible to hold a ceremony in such a short time. “In terms of hiring, supplies and staff, there is a lot to be decided before a potential ceremony. With that, we also need to make financial commitments,” the municipality told RTV Rijnmond. “We also deploy supplies and personnel to the King’s Day and Independence Day celebrations.”
Feyenoord is disappointed
Feyenoord was disappointed with the way things were going. “We understand the situation in society, but the time between the title and the award is too long,” says the spokesperson for the association.
If Feyenoord does not become champion on May 7, they have a chance to become champion in their own Kuip on Sunday, May 14. Go Ahead Eagles are then rivals.
