Ten Hag puts Ajax into perspective every week: ‘We should not panic’

Erik ten Hag was not sleep deprived due to the mediocre performance of Ajax last week. By losing the lead to Benfica (2-2) and losing to Go Ahead Eagles (2-1), the coach of the team from Amsterdam does not intend to make any changes to the game against AZ in the semi-finals. TOTO KNVB Cup.

“Of course we discussed the game against Go Ahead Eagles and talked about things that weren’t right. It was clear that he was not well. Players also know that they have failed and that they need to be able to figure things out on the pitch. Ten Hag, 52, said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“But in the last three games we haven’t played well a total of one and a half times, so we shouldn’t panic. Changing something on the roster may seem like panic, and it isn’t necessary at all. We have to improve.” Be quick because it’s March 2. The season is now starting.”

Ajax narrowly won against Willem II (0-1) on 19 February, played below par against Benfica in the Champions League after the break and suffered a bitter defeat against Go Ahead on Sunday in Deventer. According to Ten Hag, the loss of De Adelaarhorst is entirely due to his own actions.

“It is mainly about the quality we bring to the ball and the organization on the field. We are well in transition, but it requires 100% discipline and collaboration. If that is not the case, we are vulnerable and we can race with all due respect for Go Ahead, but it will not go well for us if we lose at Deventer,” said Ten Hag.

Not available against Mazraoui AZ, Timber uncertain

After varying performances, Ajax hopes to convince them again in the KNVB Cup against AZ on Thursday evening (starting at 8 p.m.). The Amsterdam Alkmaar will not have right back Noussair Mazraoui, while Jurriën Timber is still doubtful for the cup match.

Ten Hag noted that attacker Brian Brobbey went even further: “Mazraoui suffered from muscle pain last weekend and is now suffering from knee problems. He left. “I am waiting for Timber to be available, but we will have to wait for the last training,” said he On his way back from injury.

Anyway, André Onana will certainly remain under the bar against AZ due to injuries of first goalkeeper Remko Pasveer and reserve goalkeeper Jay Gorter. Moreover, as a goalkeeper, Ten Hag only has the talents of Charlie Setford and Calvin Raatsie at his disposal.

“Friends Neres”

Ten Hag also briefly discussed the situation of David Neres at the press conference. The Brazilian, who played for Ajax in the first half of the season and moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in January, was stuck with his family for a long time in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.

Last weekend Neres – just like other Brazilian players in Ukraine – managed to leave the war zone by train, to the delight of the team from Amsterdam.

“Antony in particular had a few very tough days with him,” said Ten Hag. “Of course it makes sense because of the bond between them. As a club, we contacted David through the player group. We were very concerned and very happy to hear that he had returned to a safe place last Saturday.”

The match between AZ and Ajax starts on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Alkmaar. The other semi-final will be played in Deventer on Wednesday between Go Ahead Eagles and PSV. The final will be played on Sunday 17 April.
