Borussia Dortmund took control of the Bundesliga this Sunday by beating Augsburg 3-0 with two goals from Sebastian Haller and one from Julian Brandt, putting those led by Edin Terzic one step away from the German title.
With one matchday to go, Dortmund have a two-point lead over Bayern, so a final matchday win against Mainz would make them champions regardless of what happens in other stadiums.
Dortmund – with the lead in sight after Bayern’s defeat to Leipzig on Saturday – took the initiative from the start, constantly generating arrivals in the Augsburg region and good chances. Best of all in the first half came from Niklas Süle with a header against the post, a free kick taken by Raphael Guerreiro.
Earlier, Sebastien Haller, in the 21st minute, and Julian Brandt, in the 19th and 33rd minutes, had also been close, but found good saves from goalkeeper Gregor Koubek.
In the 38th minute, Augsburg was left with ten men due to the exclusion of Feliz Udokhai for a foul against Donnyell Malen when he was the last man in defence.
When the teams settled down, Dortmund only got past the goal after 45 minutes of control on the pitch.
The Augsburg had carried out only sporadic attacks which posed no great danger. After the exclusion of Udokhai, he played the last minutes of the first part even more withdrawn.
After the break, Dortmund continued to push, bringing the ball close to the penalty area and looking for shots. On 51, Guerreiro shot wide. in minute 54 Emre Can – from middle distance – hit the ball against the post.
Oddly enough, when Dortmund’s barrage seemed to have died down and Augsburg had even had a phase where they put the ball on the other half, the goal fell,
Malen put a ball into the area which went to the feet of a defender, Maximilian Bauer, who failed to control the ball and the ball was stolen by Haller who he defined with a shot to the far post.
Augsburg tried to react and had a good chance at the feet of Cardona in minute 63, but Adeyemi got it for Dortmund immediately.
The verdict finally fell in the 84th minute. Malen shot a ball into the penalty area for Reus whose shot was partially saved by Koubek and the rebound was left to Haller who defined without any problems.
Any doubts that might have remained were solved, already at a discount, by Julian Brandt who scored with his left foot with a cross on the far post.
