“The nerves of the first round are over”: Camila Osorio

Colombian tennis player Camila Osorio confessed on Monday that she went through a “roller coaster” of emotions after winning her first match of this edition of Roland Garros, having qualified despite losing her last match of the qualifying phase.

Osorio (21 years old) defeated Romanian Ana Bogdan (30) 3-6, 6-3 and 7-5 in a match in which she confessed to the press that besides the fact that, she said, “I complained a lot.”

However, with the development of the duel, he managed to “control” his emotions, to “have control over what happened”, he explained. “The key was to keep calm and stay positive,” she stressed.

“I started to play longer points, I started to regret less,” he added, which allowed him to start taking control of the match so that he played “without fear” in the third set and finished the game with a good level of play.

He explained that he is on a “roller coaster” after being knocked out in the last match of the qualifying phase, although he was very happy then after the organization called him to replace his injured winner, American Caty McNally.

The cucuteña confessed that she was “angry” and “sad” after being eliminated, but then she was “grateful” and “happy” after being called up by the organization to receive the message that she could finally participate in the tournament.

“It’s been like a miracle for me, it’s my third year in the final stages of a Grand Slam,” he added.

Osorio explained that he is playing better and better this season and feels like he can “play with anyone”.

“And when I lose, I don’t scold myself that much,” he said.

In the second round, Camila Osorio will face Belgium’s Elise Mertens, seed number 28, who dominated Slovakia’s Viktoria Hruncakova 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday.

“It will be a very difficult match against Mertens. She is a great player with a lot of experience,” he said.

“It’s going to be a tough game” against “one of the best in the world,” he added, so he hopes to “go out on the field and… it’s going to be killer.”

“Literally. Running all the balls, fighting for every point and having fun, because I think that’s where I play my best tennis, when I’m having fun,” he continued.

Osorio hopes this Monday’s experience, which matched his result from last year in Paris, can help him better face the second round match.

“The nerves of the first round have subsided a bit,” he said, so he is confident that he will be able to keep the match with more peace than he developed this Monday from the second set.

Osorio is the sole representative of Colombian tennis in the individual draws at Roland Garros after Sunday’s first-round loss to Daniel Elahi Galán, who was knocked out by Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 and 6- 2.
