The ceremony is ancient Mesoamerican ritual which took place every 52 years in different prehispanic cultures, with him they celebrated end and start of a new cycle which today is the starting point for these games.
Yamil Bukele called this ceremony chance for rebirth for this edition of the Central American Fair, after Panamaoriginal headquarters, could not implement them due to the destruction left COVID-19 pandemic.
This is a magical place. The Mexican people are made of tradition and we are honored to be here to take on a new fire to save some of the games that seemed lost due to the pandemic. Panama had to refuse, but we, who also want to be reborn like fire, saw the opportunity to show the world what El Salvador is capable of.
XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games to be held in San Salvador will open their doors in 36 countries which will send about 5,500 athletes to participate in 53 disciplines.
“We are waiting for you all with open arms in San Salvador 2023” concluded Bukele.
Also present at the ceremony of lighting a new fire were Armando Bruni, President of the El Salvador Olympic Committee and Delmi Kanas, Ambassador of El Salvador to Mexico.
Among the former Mexican sports figures, Olympic medalists, were Jesus Mena, Carlos Mercenario, Iridia Salazar, Joel Sanchez and Fernando Platas.
