Russian Abramovich confirms Chelsea sale; help victims Ukraine –

Roman Abramovich to sell Chelsea Football Club. The Russian billionaire, who knows President Vladimir Putin well, made this known on the website of the London club, which he took over in 2003 for 60 million pounds.

Abramovich: “I think this decision is best for the club, the fans, the staff and the sponsors. The sale of the club will not happen overnight, but it is a careful process. I am not going to demand a loan from myself.”

“For me it was never about money, it was about passion for football and the club,” Abramovich continues. “I have also instructed my team to create a foundation in which the proceeds of the sale will be invested. This money will then benefit all victims of the war in Ukraine.”

British sanctions threaten

Last weekend, Abramovich decided to take a step back by formally transferring his interests to a club foundation. He is believed to be trying to keep Chelsea out of trouble, while the British Parliament has threatened sanctions against wealthy Russians over the war in Ukraine.

Abramovic injected nearly £1.5bn into Chelsea, which had become one of the biggest clubs in the world after its takeover in 2003. Last season, the club won the Champions League.
