“It’s the hardest match I’ve won”: Alcaraz

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, Wimbledon champion, assured that Sunday’s match against Serb Novak Djokvovic was the hardest of his career and the happiest moment of his life.

“Becoming Wimbledon champion is something I wanted,” Alcaraz said at a press conference. “I didn’t expect it, I didn’t think I’d get it so soon. It’s time to enjoy. It is the happiest moment of my life, certainly in five years it will change, but now I have not experienced many moments like this. Making history like today is the most beautiful thing in my life and it will not change for a while,” added de Murcia, who also added that it is “the most difficult game” he has won.

“Yes absolutely. It’s not easy to lose a fourth set against Djokovic and knowing you’re going to play a fifth brings a lot of stats to mind. I went into the fifth thinking I had a lot of chances. It’s the hardest race I’ve won,” he stressed.

“It’s a problem if you don’t capitalize on opportunities against a legend like Novak. I knew my opportunities would come, that I had to wait for my chance. If he had lost the second set, he would have definitely lost the match in three sets. It gave me a lot of confidence, a lot of motivation to keep going and to think I could beat him,” he said.

The Spaniard leaves behind what happened at Roland Garros and states that he is a different player than those in the semi-finals in Paris.

“I am a very different player from Roland Garros. I have grown and learned a lot. I prepared differently for the match, I coped better with the pressure and the nerves than in Paris. I am very happy not to give up give and fight to the last ball,” he emphasized.

On what he learned from this final, Alcaraz said, “Before this match, I didn’t think I was ready to beat Novak in five sets.”

“I did it for myself, not for the generation change, to beat Novak at his best level in this scenario. To beat him after ten years unbeaten on this track is incredible, I will never forget it. It is good for the new generation to see me beat them so they can see what can be done. It’s good for me and for the youngsters,” Alcaraz stressed after Djokovic assured that he is a mix of the ‘Big Three’.

“It’s crazy he said that, but I consider myself a very complete tennis player, I have the shots, the physical and mental strength. You’re probably right, but I don’t want to think about it. I’ve seen great legends win this trophy, epic matches and I’ve always wanted to be a part of it. Being able to say and feel it is a dream come true,” he said.
