19:45 Bouhanni in hospital after striking clash with public in Turkey

Nacer Bouhanni was forced to leave the Turkey Tour on Monday after a striking incident. During the rematch that stretched from Selçuk to Alaçatı, Bouhanni ran into someone walking confidently on the road.

Some runners, including Bouhanni, were unable to avoid this person and fell at high speed.

A video of the event has been posted on social media. The motorbike in front of the peloton overtakes the person crossing the road without doing anything else. A bystander tries to push the walker away as the pack passes, but several riders collide with the two.

Bouhanni, 31, was taken to hospital for examination. He was found there with a fracture of the first cervical vertebra, the team of Arkéa Samsic reports. He would soon be transferred to France for treatment.

The French sprinter has already achieved numerous victories at important races in his career, most notably the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España. Australian Kaden Groves won the race. Cees Bol moved up to fourth place, their best result of the season.

The discussion about bicycle safety has been going on for years. The international cycling federation UCI has repeatedly promised improvements, but according to many riders and sports directors, little is being done about safety.
