NFL: Concussions down 52% thanks to Guardian caps | video

Jeff Miller, Executive Vice President NFLsaid this Wednesday that concussion players suffered during training camps reduced 52 percent thanks to “Guardian Caps” (soft covers over helmets).

“We started last year with use of “Guardian Caps” in the offensive line, defensive line, linebackers and tight ends before the second pre-season game without fail, since then and compared to the average of three years ago we have seen 52 percent fewer concussions“, explained Miller.

This soft case which is worn over the helmet, was implemented in training before the 2022 season with aim to reduce concussions this happened in the preseason, although it was limited to some positions; from that year it was also used by runners and catchers.

We decided to expand it; one of the positions was with brokers because of the number of contacts they have. The most important thing for me is that with “Guardian Caps” each impact on the head reduces force by 20 percent.

The manager admitted that received several complaints from players for some discomfort what causes this addition though acknowledged that they are open to their improvement.

“We saw that there were some negative comments about the adjustment because may have missed a bit this was something we developed with the manufacturer and they provided us with brand new ‘Guardian Caps’. Still looks a little weird on a helmetbut we look forward to hearing from players about their experience.”

The NFL admitted last May that Concussions in the 2022 season have increased compared to 2021.

They signed up 149 concussions in 271 games, an 18 percent increase from the 2021 campaign, when there were 126; 14 percent more than an average of 130, which were counted between 2018 and 2020.

Despite these numbers, the league’s executive vice president said that The use of Guardian Caps during matches is not planned. soon.
