Lawyers for former Ferrari driver Felipe Massasued leaders Formula 1 and FIA claim damages resulting from the alleged “conspiracy” that stripped him of the 2008 championship.
A previous complaint letter says the 42-year-old Brazilian lost his title as a result of actions at the highest level that cost him tens of millions of euros in profits and lost bonuses.
Massa turned to lawyers in the UK, Brazil, USA, Switzerland and France.
A grievance letter is a formal legal notice that is required before litigation begins.
Immediate response from the FIA or F1 to a request for Reuters. Now Formula 1 is on a break in August.
The letter, sent from the London office of Enyo Law on August 15, says.
Simply put, Mr. Massa is the rightful 2008 and F1 World Drivers’ Champion and the FIA willfully ignored the misconduct that stripped him of that title.
“At present, Mr. Massa cannot fully estimate his losses, but he believes that they could exceed tens of millions of euros. This amount does not cover the serious moral and reputational losses suffered by Mr. Massa,” he added.
The letter was addressed to the CEO of F1, Stefano Domenicaliformer Team Leader Massa at Ferrari and President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayembased in Paris.
The letter warns that without a satisfactory response to their possible claims, Massa intends to “go to court to obtain compensation for the damage caused, as well as the recognition that, if not for these illegal actions, he would have been awarded the 2008 championship.”
Massa was leading the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix when compatriot Nelson Piquet crashed his Renault into the wall on lap 14. The crash prompted a safety car and helped Piqué’s teammate, Spaniard Fernando Alonso, who won the race.
Massa failed to score after a mistaken pit stop and McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton ended up edging him by one championship point.
In 2009, Piqué revealed that Renault team bosses ordered him to crash and were subsequently fined. The Scandal That Got the Name emergency exitbecame one of the greatest in the history of sports.
“I want justice to prevail. To understand whether what happened was right or wrong,” Massa told Reuters in May.
If the most important people in F1 and the FIA knew about this in 2008 and did nothing, do you think it was fair? This is unfair.
