Tuchel disappointed by smiling referee after Chelsea knocked out at Madrid

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is displeased with Polish referee Szymon Marciniak’s meeting with Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti on Tuesday, just after Chelsea were knocked out as champions in the quarter-finals.

“When I went to thank the referee, he joked about the opponent’s coach,” Tuchel said after the exciting game in which Chelsea reached the semi-finals with a surprising 0 win. 3, but saw it go back to Real 2-3.

“I don’t think it’s a good time to laugh when a team has played 126 minutes to its heart. It’s just bad timing and I told him that.”

With Chelsea leading 0-2, Marcos Alonso’s hand goal was disallowed. Referee Marciniak followed VAR’s advice and concluded that Alonso had touched the ball with his hand.

Tuchel said: ‘I was very disappointed that he didn’t just go and look at the screen. “You have to stay in control and not leave the decision to a recluse in the bank,” he said.

“We must take this defeat with pride”

Despite his disappointment with the referee and the result, the 48-year-old German was delighted with the way his side showed up at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

“We went to the extreme and I am proud of my players. We deserved to qualify, but luck was not on our side. We cannot blame ourselves and must accept this loss with pride.”

Karim Benzema, who had a hat-trick in the first game, made the decision by scoring 2-3 in the injury period. Chelsea will therefore no longer be able to win the Champions League this year.

Atletico Madrid-Manchester City and Liverpool-Benfica will play the last two games of the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
