Villarreal surprises Bayern Munich with Champions League goal

Bayern Munich have been eliminated for the second time in a row in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. After a 1-0 defeat in the first leg, a 1-1 draw with Villarreal in Munich was not enough.

The Spanish club reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second time in its history. Villarreal reached this point in the 2005/2006 season. The Spaniards were subsequently excluded from the final by Arsenal. Now Villarreal will face the winner of the match between Liverpool and Benfica.

In Spain’s first division, Villarreal was clearly the best and Unai Emery’s team also started well in Munich on Tuesday evening. The first shot of the game came from Gerard Moreno, but that didn’t make it difficult for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Bayern Munich needed a goal for a chance to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League and so went on the hunt. The biggest chance for the Germans was Jamal Musiala in the first half. The midfielder took a free kick, but Villarreal goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli saved it.

Villarreal was immediately dangerous twice at half time. Étienne Capoue sent the first leg striker Arnaut Danjuma deep and caught the orange-colored national goalkeeper Neuer. His shot then went wide. Moreno was also lucky to score the opening goal, but found the side net.
