Simone Biles will compete in Katy, Texas for the USA Women’s National Team Selection Camp next World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, and Pan American Games 2023 in Santiago.
On the other hand, the current Olympic champion Sunisa Lee ruled out his participation due to kidney disease.
Biles, the most decorated gymnast in US history, overall winner Olympic Games Rio 2016 but he resigned during Tokyo 2020 due to mental health problems, expressed a desire to compete in Paris 2024.
The U.S. women’s team has already qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but the nation’s top gymnasts must compete against each other in the coming months to earn a spot on the team.
If she secures her place at the world championships, Biles will compete in Antwerp in search of her sixth overall world title. The first was won in the Belgian city in 2013, followed by Nanning, China in 2014, Glasgow, UK in 2015, Doha, Qatar in 2018 and Stuttgart, Germany in 2019.
In total between individual and team competitions, Biles adds, 19 gold, three silver and three bronze medals at the World Championships.
Sunisa Lee, who won the gold medal at Tokyo 2020 after her teammate’s withdrawal, has been suffering from kidney problems since March last year and medication has prevented her from training at the pace needed to prepare for the world championships, the gymnast said.
This does not exclude her participation in Paris 2024, the selection for which will take place next year.
Joining Biles in Katy’s tournament will be 18 other gymnasts, including Olympic medalists Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles.
