Arrival of Ukrainian athletes at the fifth Invictus Games still unclear

“As we know, the situation in the country is quite uncertain. They have registered, but can’t say how many people they will come with yet. We hope to be confirmed soon, because time is running out, the opening is Saturday.” The spokesman, who does not know when he will receive a red or green light from Ukraine, said in a statement.

With nearly 500 participants from 17 countries and Ukraine, 18 countries are active in ten sports: athletics, weightlifting, archery, indoor rowing, Land Rover Driving Challenge, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, cycling, sitting volleyball and swimming. Most sports take place in and around the Zuiderpark. Delegations from Jordan and New Zealand are missing due to corona infections.

The public interest is great. More than 60,000 tickets have already been sold for the matches. The public also has free access to the special fan zone in the Zuiderpark. There are daily performances by military bands and rock bands, there is a climbing wall and other sports activities such as participating in disabled sports.

The Invictus Games is an international sporting event for military personnel and veterans who have been psychologically or physically injured during military service. British creator and boss Prince Harry launched the Games in 2014 to promote healing through sport, support rehabilitation and build understanding and respect for wounded soldiers and veterans.

The Invictus Games will take place from Saturday, April 16 to Friday, April 22. In addition to the presence of Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, King Willem-Alexander and Princess Margriet are also present.

The event in and around the Zuiderpark in The Hague was originally planned for 2020 but had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic. The sixth edition of the Invictus Games will be held in Düsseldorf, Germany in 2023.

The NOS broadcasts the Opening and Closing Ceremonies live and presents a look back at the day after Nieuwsuur on NPO 2 every day at 10 p.m. or shortly afterwards. In addition to the sports section, special attention is paid to meetings between veterans and reports on the progress of the participants.
