Boca Juniors will play the 2023 Copa Libertadores final against Fluminense after beating Palmeiras in an agonizing penalty shootout, 2-4, at the Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo on Thursday, following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani put Xeneize’s team ahead in the 23rd minute, but a shot from his compatriot Joaquín Piquerez from outside the penalty area equalized in penalties.
Boca, who did not get further than 0-0 at La Bombonera, played in the minority in the last half hour after the expulsion of Marcos Rojo, who was overwhelmed by the half-time entry of Endrick, the jewel level with Real Madrid.
Goalkeeper Sergio Romero kept the Argentina side alive with a number of worthy saves and shone again with two other saves in the penalty shootout.
The final will be played on November 4 at the Maracaná Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
Boca’s rival will be Fluminense, who qualified after coming back from Internacional (1-2) in the final minutes, with Argentine striker Germán Cano playing the key role by giving away the first goal and scoring the second for the Rio team.
