Current FC Barcelona CEO Joan Laporta has been charged as part of an investigation into possible bribery related to the appointment of referees in Spanish football. This is reported by the Spanish justice system.
Previously, former presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell were accused of making suspicious payments to a company owned by José Maria Enriquez Negreira. As one of the vice-presidents of the Referee Committee in Spain, he is said to have used his influence in appointing referees for the Barcelona matches.
According to reports in various Spanish media, FC Barcelona paid 6.5 million euros to Negreira’s company between 2001 and 2018. It is said that his son also received money.
Laporta denied
Laporta denies all allegations of corruption. He had previously described it as pure slander and announced that he would decide to attack. “They are deliberately trying to destroy us,” Laporta said.
