“Swansea” legend Kevin Jones says he has been battling cancer for more than a year.
The beloved entertainer and broadcaster, known to many as Swansea City’s matchday presenter and club chaplain, made the comments during the club’s latest fan forum at the Swansea.com Stadium on Wednesday night.
Chairman Andy Coleman joined coach Michael Duff, sporting director Paul Watson and captain Matt Grimes on the Jones-led night. Questions from fans ranged from recruitment strategy to the club’s ownership model and even the theme of matchday programmes.
However, the night ended on a slightly emotional note when a fan thanked the club for raising awareness for cancer charity Maggie’s with this season’s third pink kit. The measure is part of the club’s involvement in the Let’s Fight Cancer Together campaign and has been widely praised.
A visibly emotional Jones, who received the Freedom of the City award last December, revealed he had been through his own battle with cancer and thanked the club for their recent support.
“I have been in treatment for 15 months,” he began.
“This club took care of me. I had my kidney removed six weeks ago and two weeks ago I was absolutely sure there was no cancer in my body.
“This football club has a heart and cares about the people who are part of this football club. Whether you are a fan, player or have a different job. Continue.”
Coleman also paid tribute to the club’s community spirit on the same night, adding that he is determined to succeed on and off the field.
“For me, Swansea Way is so much more than what happens on the pitch. It’s about community and togetherness.
“Everyone is proud to be from here and it’s an incredible place. This pride in the community, the football club and each other is something everyone here should be proud of.
“My job is to leave this club in a much better situation than when I arrived here, it is important that they hold me accountable because they are the heart and soul of this club.
“We value and appreciate you and cannot perform on or off the field without you.”
