Neymar tore his anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee in Brazil’s World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay. His club Al-Hilal announced that the Brazilian striker will undergo surgery and face a rehabilitation period that will last for months.
Things went wrong for Neymar against Uruguay at the end of the first half. After an innocent duel with Nicolás De La Cruz, he resigned and went onto the field with a pained face.
He eventually left the field in tears and after a while left the stadium on crutches. An MRI scan later confirmed the severity of the injury, which usually requires a nine-month recovery period.
Just five games
Neymar has played just five matches since his transfer to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, which paid a transfer fee of 90 million euros and will pay him a salary of 160 million euros over two seasons.
Neymar’s participation in the South American championship Copa América may now be in jeopardy. This tournament will take place in the United States in June and July 2024.
