Rayados beat Pumas with a goal in added time

Monterrey earned a gut-wrenching 1-0 victory on Sunday when they visited Pumas UNAM on the thirteenth day of Mexico’s Apertura soccer tournament.

Monterrey’s Rayados, who have two games remaining, have 20 points and moved up from eighth to fifth place overall.

There were few scoring opportunities in the match at Mexico City’s Olympic University Stadium, and it was not until the 93rd minute that Alfonso González scored the winning goal for Monterrey with a shot into the box, hitting the ball close to the left post after being controlled by center Luis Romo from the right.

Despite the loss, Pumas remains in third place with 21 points.

The day will end later when Atlético San Luis take on Necaxa.

America notched a fourth straight win on Saturday, beating Santos Laguna 4-3 to remain top of the tournament with 30 points, five points behind second-place Tigres UANL, who beat Cruz Azul 2-1.

In other games on Saturday, Leon beat Toluca 1-0, and Queretaro beat Tijuana by the same score.

At the start of the day, Guadalajara won 2-0 at Puebla, Mazatlan beat Atlas 3-1, and Pachuca beat Bravos de Ciudad Juarez 1-0 in guests. (Reuters).
