David Hernández, cancer survivor and member of Função Picos de Esperança, he said in an interview with EFE.

It was a journey of self-discovery and inner strength. Every step we took towards the top was a new step in our fight against cancer. We hope that our experiences inspire others.

The 29-year-old was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 17 and developed metastases a year later, so one of his legs was amputated and he underwent surgery that left him on the brink of death.

After beating cancer and despite losing one of his limbs, David looked for a way to help others and, together with Matthew Dornier, a French businessman settled in Mexico, he founded Summits of Hope to help those affected by cancer have survived to help and try to fight cancer. yourself through experiences such as climbing.

As a cancer survivor, it seemed extremely interesting to me to find a project like this that shows that there is life after cancer, after illness, that helps you reintegrate into society, and even more so if you have a disability .

Last July, a group of Mexicans led by Hernández went to… The French Alps to celebrate the 29th edition of the Summits of Hope, a symbolic event sponsored by the club Semons l’espoir, in which French survivors also participated.

Chamonix, the base of Mont Blanc in France, was the location of this trip, where five people connected based on their willingness to overcome the obstacle.

We reached almost 4,000 meters in altitude, it was an incredible experience, we made many friends and were able to share this experience with other survivors, which was very valuable.

On July 27, a group of over a dozen survivors conquered the top of the Pyramid of Vincent, a mountain in the Monte Rosa massif.

After climbing the Alps, the Mexicans returned to the country with a new challenge: climbing Pico de Orizabao, the highest volcano in North America, 5,636 meters high.

It is an experience that they already lived in 2022 and that they are trying to repeat this year, but now with French survivors who accompanied her in the Pyramid of Vincent.

They will come from November 19 for a high mountain program. We are all going to climb the Pico de Orizaba, more than 15 cancer survivors at the top, there are even two or three people on crutches, but they will climb this way.

In Mexico, cancer is the third leading cause of death, but it is estimated that three out of ten cases are preventable and six out of ten cases diagnosed early are likely to be curable.

According to official information, about 90,000 people die annually in the country from this neoplasm. and those with higher malignancy and incidence of breast, prostate, cervical, colon and lung cancer.
