Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her four-year ban for failing an anti-doping test, as confirmed on Tuesday by the Lausanne (Switzerland) organization.
“The TAS registered this appeal, filed by Simona Halep against the decision of the International Tennis Integrity Agency court on September 22, 2023, which indicated that he had committed a violation of the anti-doping rules and was punished with a prison sentence of four years, effective September 7. October 2022 and the cancellation of all results achieved in competitions between August 29, 2022 and October 7, 2022, including the loss of medals, titles, ranking points and prize money,” CAS said.
The court confirmed that the arbitration procedure had already begun and emphasized that the former world number one demanded this. This decision is “annulled” and “the sentence is reduced”. The arbitral tribunal will now be constituted and will decide on this appeal after the relevant hearing.
The TAS stressed that “it is not possible to specify a deadline for issuing the decision.” and that this “shall be final and binding, except at the law of the parties, an appeal to the Swiss Federal Court within 30 days.”

Simona Halep, 32, was temporarily suspended from October 2022 after testing positive for the banned drug uvadustat last month. Her four-year sanction was upheld in September after the Tennis Integrity Unit Tribunal ruled she had deliberately breached anti-doping rules.
If the sanction is confirmed, the Romanian will have declared this in a statement made at the time of suspension: “I have never consciously or intentionally consumed a prohibited substance” and will not be able to participate again in the competition until October 2026, when his turn comes . 35 years old.
