Swiss judiciary closes criminal investigation into FIFA boss Infantino

The Swiss judiciary closed the criminal investigation launched in July 2020 against Gianni Infantino, president of the world football federation FIFA. The case was dismissed.

Infantino was discredited in 2020 following an article published in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. According to the newspaper, he had secret meetings with Attorney General Michael Lauber in 2016 and 2017. At the time, the Swiss judiciary was investigating corruption within FIFA and suspected both Infantino and Lauber of, among other things, abuse of power and breach of official secrecy.

The special prosecutor then noted evidence of “criminal conduct” but apparently failed to prove it.

Lauber previously resigned after a court found he had tried to conceal his links to Infantino and lied to his bosses while investigating corruption at world football’s governing body.

“Pathetic, jealous people”

The Swiss were, of course, very pleased that the investigations into Infantino were inconclusive. “This is a complete and clear victory for me, for the new FIFA and for justice,” he said.

The Swiss had nothing good to say about the turn of events. “It is now clear that the allegations against me are simply attempts by poor, jealous and corrupt individuals to attack my reputation. “If these people are still honorable, they should at least have the decency to apologize for their actions and the damage they have caused.”
