Eddie Jones has reportedly resigned as Australia coach after a dismal Rugby World Cup campaign.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Jones and Rugby Australia have reached an agreement to allow the former England coach to leave. Jones is heavily linked with the top job in Japan, where he will replace Jamie Joseph.
It was the Wallabies’ worst World Cup campaign as they failed to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since a record 40–6 defeat to Wales and a historic loss to Fiji. Jones was expected to be the man to return Australia to the highest levels of world football, but the Wallabies won just two of the nine Tests under his leadership.
Jones sparked controversy by taking a young and inexperienced team to the World Cup in France, omitting the likes of Michael Hooper and Quaid Cooper. This has had a dramatic impact on Jones, who will now leave Australia less than a year into his five-year contract.
The 63-year-old will coach the Barbarians against Wales next Saturday alongside new New Zealand coach Scott Robertson at the Principality Stadium, with Alan Wyn Jones in action for the world’s most famous team.
